As Valentines day speeds around the corner at a super fast pace its time to look at the beginning of the year and think where has January gone?

I for one just remembered it was Valentines day yesterday and haven't even thought of a gift for my loved one. Instead of focusing this blog on Valentines Day Gift ideas.. dinner, flowers, chocolates, jewellery. I ask the question what is Valentines day and why do we celebrate it? Is it just a money making scam for retailers to sell cheesy I love you gifts?

Researching the history of Valentines day results in many fables or perhaps truthful legends as to the true meaning behind this celebration.

We take a trip back intro Roman times, Claudius II had not allowed marriage for young men, claiming that bachelors made better soldiers, what do you think?. Valentine the true romantic was a priest and continued to secretly perform marriage ceremonies. Unfortunately he was eventually caught and sentence to death.

Another legend has it that Valentine was imprisoned by Claudius, a Roman emperor. Valentine then fell in love with the daughter of his jailer and before he was executed, he allegedly sent her a letter signed "from your Valentine." That sounds familiar!
There are many other legends but they all depict Saint Valentine as a hero and romantic figure and perhaps that's a bit of a insight as to why it is seen as a romantic day of celebration. So spoil your loved one and be as romantic as you can :-)

How will you celebrate Valentines Day?
